Italian coffee maker stove - to tamp or not to tamp?

My cappuccino died a sad death recently (sorry, I left for about 36 hours). So I dragged the old stove Italian aluminum espresso maker and a nifty plastic milk steamer I bought at Ikea. I'm doing a tasty coffee, but I do not hit very hard - more than just push a little and leveling off. Will I have a cup of coffee better if tamp? I realize I could give you one try, but if it fails, takes too darn long to cool this thing before I can make another cup.

In electric espresso machines rams to compress it to a disc. You also need a super-fine powder. In the top-stove pots should never tamp the coffee beans expand when wet (more tamping or less). Just use a medium grind-thick and pour into the filter basket in a heap.
